Peer Based Harm Reduction WA is currently seeking applicants for an Aboriginal Community Engagement & Peer Education Worker to join our Perth Metro Team. This is an opportunity to join an innovative multidisciplinary team based in Perth City and delivering health & harm reduction services in communities throughout the greater Perth metropolitan area. Peer Based Harm Reduction WA is a consumer-led peer-based organisation. People with a relevant lived or living experience are strongly encouraged to apply.
Pursuant to Section 50(d) of the Equal Employment Opportunities Act 1984, the occupant of this position must be of Australian Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander descent.

Peer Based Harm Reduction WA (PBHR WA) is a state-wide, peer-based community organisation that aims to improve the health and social circumstances of people who use drugs in WA. PBHR WA is WA’s largest provider of health and harm reduction services for people who inject drugs. The organisation is staffed and governed by people who may have/have had personal experience of substance use, and by people who have an interest in substance use issues and who support PBHR WA practice and principles. This position is part of PBHR WA Perth Metro Team, based in Aberdeen St, Perth and working in outreach and mobile health clinic settings throughout the metro area.

Role and Responsbilities

Position Objectives Aboriginal Peer Education Project:

  • Increase the accessibility of HCV testing and treatment and facilitate access to needle and syringe programs and safer injecting practices for Aboriginal people who inject drugs in the Perth metro area.
  • Build relationships with relevant stakeholders and community members to further the project objectives.
  • In collaboration with other PBHR WA Staff, recruit and support a small team of volunteer peer educators.

Position Objectives Aboriginal Community Engagement Worker:

  • Assist in the development and co-design of information, resources, and opportunities for engagement that are accessible to members of the Aboriginal community.
  • Support opportunities to deliver a range of health and harm reduction initiatives to Aboriginal people that meet consumer needs.
  • Encourage active involvement and participation of Aboriginal people who inject drugs in decision-making processes, problem-solving, and the planning and implementation of initiatives.
