Youth Justice in the News
Wungening Aboriginal Corporation CEO Daniel Morrison’s Opinion Piece on youth justice in WA and Banksia Hill Detention Centre recently appeared in The West Australian (Daniel Morrison: The five key questions McGowan Government must answer on Banksia Hill, 15 November 2022).
“I understand many people will think that this situation is unsolvable. I respectfully disagree. Enough people have been adding their voice to work with the Government for some time. On taskforces. In policy development. In service provision that is culturally informed within the prison.”
Both The West Australian newspaper and the ABC’s Four Corners program (VIDEO: Locking Up Kids: Australia’s failure to protect children in detention, 14 November 2022) have recently reported on human rights issues at WA’s only youth detention centre, Banksia Hill and the detention of children at WA’s main adult prison, Casuarina Prison.
Daniel also spoke to ABC Radio ahead of the WA Youth Justice Summit held on 23 November 2022. Daniel attended the summit in his role as Co-Chair of Social Reinvestment WA (Premier promises to listen at Banksia Hill crisis talks while Opposition dismisses meeting as a ‘talk fest’, The West Australian, 22 November 2022).
Social Reinvestment WA has developed a comprehensive evidence-based blueprint outlining a vision for a more effective and connected youth justice system in Western Australia. Read The Blueprint for A Better Future Report, including full recommendations.
