Urgent action needed on WA's alcohol delivery laws
WANADA is committed to leading an alcohol and other drug sector approach to reducing harm from alcohol and other drugs.
The online sale and delivery of alcohol is associated with high-risk alcohol use and related harms in Western Australia. The rapid delivery of alcohol is bringing more alcohol into homes and extending drinking sessions, which increases the risk of alcohol-related harms, including domestic and family violence.
WANADA is working with Cancer Council WA, the Alcohol and Drug Foundation and others to advocate for the WA Government to introduce restrictions on online alcohol sales and delivery.
We are encouraged that momentum is building with South Australia’s reform legislation passing this week and the Australian House of Representatives Report on the Health Impacts of Alcohol and Other Drugs recommending states and territories adopt the same restrictions.
“As the peak body representing alcohol and other drug services across Western Australia, WANADA supports evidence-informed approaches to reduce alcohol-related harms in community,” said WANADA Acting CEO Rochelle McIntosh. “We congratulate the South Australian Government in leading the nation with a prevention approach.”
The current review of Western Australia’s Liquor Control Act is a once-in-a-decade opportunity for reform to minimise harms from alcohol. We support the reforms to include safeguards around the online sale and delivery of alcohol.
